How to Read a Scholarly Article

Many scholarly articles of some or all of the following sections. Each section serves a different purpose. Don't spend time reading the entire article word for word. Instead, focus on the most important parts.

  • Abstract: summary of the article (read word for word)
  • Introduction: description of what is being researched and why (read word for word)
  • Literature Review: historical information about the topic, what is already established, definitions (scan it)
  • Methods: how the research was done (skip it)
  • Results: what they found out (scan it)
  • Conclusions/Discussion: the implications of the result (read word for word)
  • References: who they cited (scan it - you often find more sources to read from this list!)
