- holds information and makes that information searchable
- can be organized by a specific topic and/or file type (Netflix - subject is movies and tv shows, file type is video files; IMDB - subject is movie and tv shows, file type is website pages)
- databases hold sources rather than being a source - you could potentially get all your sources from the same database
popular:
- written for a general audience
- examples can include newspapers, magazines, blogs, some books
- may or may not be edited
scholarly:
- written by experts for experts
- examples can include academic journals and books
peer-review:
- scholarly information that goes through a rigorous editing process by experts in that field
- examples can include academic journal articles
